LEE HEALTH ACTIVATES HOSPITAL SURGE PLAN FOR COVID-19 PATIENTS
A coronavirus surge plan has been activated for hospitals seeing a large rise in COVID-19 patients. Lee Health hospitals are filling up with people in need of help to the point nurses are treating patients in hallways. Lee Health is moving groups of COVID-19 patients to their own unit and outside of the overcrowded hospitals. Late last week, its staffed bed capacity was at 89% with a 95% bed capacity in ICU. Gulf Coast Medical Center in Lee County is using the first floor of a skilled nursing unit to treat COVID-19 patients who no longer need hospital care but are not fully recovered to return home yet. Lee Health also brought in travel nurses and now offers incentives for those who pick up extra shifts and increased pay for frontline workers,WINK News reports.

SENIOR LIVING FACILITY IN SOUTH FORT MYERS ON LOCKDOWN BECAUSE OF COVID-19

The Brookdale Senior Living facility in the Cypress Lake area of south Fort Myers went on lockdown Thursday, and it's not allowing visitors or accepting new residents because of the coronavirus. The lockdown comes as COVID-19 cases in Florida are surging and hospitals rooms are filing up. The senior facility confirmed more than one member of the community tested positive for COVID-19,WINK News reports.

RALPH LAUREN OPENS NEW STORE AT WATERSIDE SHOPS IN NAPLES

Ralph Lauren reopened its retail store Friday in a new location at Waterside Shops in Naples. Ralph Lauren at Waterside temporarily closed this spring so that Hermès could build out its new store in that space. Ralph Lauren moved from its freestanding space on the eastern edge of the open-air mall to the large end space Brooks Brothers vacated near the former Nordstrom anchor store on the west side of the upscale center. The new store, 5485 Tamiami Trail N., Suite D-1, offers an expanded assortment of apparel, footwear and accessories for men, women and children, as well as the brand's extended shopping services such as curbside pick-up, styling consultations and virtual shopping appointments. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

FPL PROJECT INCLUDES INTERMITTENT CLOSURES ON BONITA BEACH ROAD

A Florida Power & Light project will include intermittent road closures and hovering helicopters in Bonita Springs. An FPL contractor will be performing work on power lines beginning today and continuing through Sept. 10. Residents and motorists likely will see a helicopter assisting with the power line work, which involves installing new power lines from Golden Gate Parkway in Collier County to East Terry Street in Bonita Springs and over Interstate 75. As a result, a section of Bonita Beach Road west of Oakland Drive will be closed to all traffic for about 10 minutes four times during the course of the month. The brief closures will occur between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

STEVENS CONSTRUCTION COMPLETES SWFL CHILDREN'S CHARITIES EYE INSTITUTE OF GOLISANO HOSPITAL

Stevens Construction's special projects division has completed SWFL Children's Charities Eye Institute of Golisano Children's Hospital, announced Dan Adams, company vice president, south Florida. Located at 11390 Summerlin Square Drive in Fort Myers, the 5,700-square-foot SWFL Children's Charities Eye Institute is the largest pediatric ophthalmology office serving Lee County. It includes a lobby, 14 exam rooms, offices and nurse stations appointed with colorful finishes. Stevens Construction provided an interior demolition and a complete renovation of the existing building into the new pediatric practice, which is now open. The Stevens Construction special projects team included Joe Cimilluca, Norma Cimilluca, Mark Pelafas and Shane Sindledecker. Burt Hill/Pollock Krieg Architects was the architect of record. Stevens Construction launched a special projects division in 2018 to serve projects ranging from $500,000 and under. Special projects include tenant improvements, additions, renovations, repairs and more.

TELESPECIALISTS LAUNCHES TELEPSYCHIATRY SERVICE

TeleSpecialists LLC, a national leader in hospital-based telemedicine and quality management services, launched its TelePsychiatry servicelast week in several Florida hospitals, with plans to expand over the coming months. TeleSpecialists' TelePsychiatry service provides emergent and consult liaison psychiatric services via telehealth technology for adult, adolescent and pediatric patients in the hospital setting. Medical directorship is also available. Dr. Kristina Bedynerman has been hired as the medical director of TeleSpecialists' TelePsychiatry service. Bedynerman has extensive telepsychiatry, inpatient and outpatient experience, as well as research and teaching experience. She is a graduate of the Physician Leadership Institute with CTI. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has published several articles in medical journals. She is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and maintains membership in the Neuroscience Education Institute Master Psychopharmacology program and the Golden Key International Society.

HR COLLIER TO HOST MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING AUG. 19
HR Collier will host its monthly membership meeting on Aug. 19 at the Vineyards County Club. Sgt. Thad Rhodes will present "What to do in an Active Shooter Situation." The program will contain actual footage of events and discuss the use of firearms. A comprehensive review of the Department of Homeland Security's "Run, Hide Fight" program will be discussed. OUR MOTHER'S HOME WELCOMES MILLER AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Our Mother's Home (OMH) has hired Alicia Miller as executive director. In her role, Miller will oversee the development of a new transitional home for young mothers who are aging out of the foster care system. Currently, OMH is unable to provide long-term housing for girls after they turn 18. The transitional home will allow young women and their children to have a safe space to live and additional support they may need as they age out of the system, the organization states. Before joining OMH, Miller served as the executive director for The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center and the Adoption Specialist for The Children's Network. She was named one ofGulfshore Business' 40 under 40 in 2019 and recognized as the Cape Coral Community Foundation's Executive Director of the Year in 2020. Miller graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in secondary education.

Lee Association of Remarkable Citizens (LARC) has welcomed Michael J. Gavala III to its board of directors. Gavala has more than 40 years of restaurant and catering experience. After attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, he started his first catering business and gourmet market in New Jersey. He moved to Fort Myers in 1994 and became the owner/operator of Sasse il Pizzaiuolo and served as FineMark National Bank & Trust's corporate food and beverage director for more than 10 years. Partnering with his wife, Chef Karen Gavala, he created G3 Catering. In 2017, Gavala, with two partners, built Misty Morning Barn at Clutch Farms on a 35-acre parcel off Corkscrew Road in Fort Myers. Starting in September, G3 Catering will take the reins of the Burroughs Home and Gardens. Established in 1954, LARC's mission is to empower and support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to reach their full potential.

PBS Contractors has promoted Kathy Smart to vice president of marketing and sales. In this position, Smart will lead the marketing and sales strategies for continued company growth. PBS Contractors hired Smart in summer 2020 as director of marketing and, within a year, developed a complete marketing strategy, complete with a new brand identity and website. Smart has more than 30 years of marketing and sales experience.

Hiatt's promotion furthers efforts to grow the firm's presence in South Florida. Valerie's House announces $30,000 in inaugural college scholarships

Valerie's House, a nonprofit organization in Southwest Florida helping children grieve, has awarded $30,000 in college scholarships for graduating high school seniors who have participated in its program. It's the first year that Valerie's House has offered scholarships of $1,500 per year for four years for a total of $6,000 per student. Five students were chosen based on an essay they each wrote about their personal grief story and how their loss shaped them as the person they are and the person they want to become. The scholarship recipients are Marcel Garcia of Naples, Stori McDougall-Eva of Fort Myers, Shane Spotz of Cape Coral, Austin Wolin of Punta Gorda, and Ashley Zimmerman of Naples. The scholarship funds may be used for classes, materials, or anything they need during the school year.
